North of the Latte Line and other poetry happenings

North of the Latte Line: this is a poetry weblog that tells you about poetry events in Tasmania.

The phrase comes from a comment made by Tim Thorne, at the Sunday session of 'Another Country', November 2001, about poets "... north of the line somewhere in Elizabeth Street where the latte runs out ... " . Too good not to pick up and use in some way.

Also see page about The Republic Readings (about the pub readings, chapbook) and information about the Tasmanian poetry broadsheet, The Poets' Republic

Bob Broughton of arts@work organises this series of readings at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery (enter via the Courtyard between Davey & Macquarie Sts, Hobart).

Moorilla Readings:

The Bond Store series above continues a tradition which began with the 'Moorilla Readings' (no longer held) which Bob organised in 2000 and 2001 at the Moorilla Estate in Berridale, Tasmania. The essence of the readings at that venue are encapsulated in the excellent anthology, Moorilla Mosaic.

Launceston

Launceston is home to the world-renowned Launceston Poetry Cup, which takes place each year at the Launceston Poetry Festival, a one-minute poetry competition challenging poets to succeed in wowing the audience with a poem performed within a one-minute time-frame, the winner being the person eliciting the loudest applause/audience response. The Launceston Poetry Festival has been on the go for at least seventeen years under the direction of poet Tim Thorne, who retired from that role in 2001. It's now directed by Steve Davis.
