The Write Stuff vol. 7

exterminator

moved into ravo a coupla months ago
back with the missus & kids & me pitbull.
call him killer, cos he can & he has.
built him a cyclone-wire run, keep him chained
keep the neighbours sweet. toss him a roadkill
now & then, fill his water bucket from the hose
before hosing him down, crowd control, makes him
real mad. take him up the bush now & then for a kill.
he’s a fighter not a hunter, daz brings him
a sparring partner, strays & that. train him for the ring.
that pitbull’s gonna make me a mint

had to fit new locks on the run, neighbours don’t
like it, reckon he’s a kid killer - see mine- two of them
they know better than to go near him
these other idiots think he’s some kind of pet
he’s a working dog & not to be sooked-up by do-gooding
know-it-all animal rights bozos. don’t want him damaged
by the chain so put double locks on the run & put that fat chicks
cats in with him, but he’s locked in, see. & it’s the clown
next door & his german shepherd cop the shit.
shorten the odds, see. reckon there’s half a dozen fights
in him. ‘sonly a dog. need my money back for the next one
got my eye on a bitch ready to drop, checked out the dog
pick of the litter, way to go. counting the cash already.
start him real young on runt pups. don’t do no harm

that do-good neighbour’s called the pigs on me, charged
with animal cruelty. bastards took my dog away & killed him
all that money gone like a beer on a hot day, leaving you
wanting a jugful. got his precious shepherds though
ratsak over the fence on a bit of roo
leave the missus & sprogs here, they’ll be all right.
back up the country, me. bit of farm labouring & closer
to the fight sites. no hang-ups about working dogs up there
put up a humpy in the bush. perfect.
miss that killer, he had potential
