vegetarian

auntie jen’s a vegetarian
i like it when she comes to stay
she brings her wok & steamer
jars of sprouts & yoghurt maker
boxes & bottles of things i've
never seen before
& she takes over the kitchen

mum says, thanks
& catches up on the ironing

there’s hardly any washing up
because my mothers sister does it
" as she goes along, no sense in
piling dirty dishes
try this, taste that
i'll make a cheesecake
& a pie for lunch tomorrow.
would you like to roll that pastry
please squash those biscuits into crumbs"

& i do it
because i love the way the table
groans at mealtimes
& how great it looks spread like a feast

mum asks angus how he liked
the vegeburgers she made
for the end of season barbeque
he grinned
“ wait until i tell the team those great burgers
were meatless!”

dad says
vegetarians are full of wind
