The Write Stuff vol. 7

The Christmas Compliment

After the long day's journey
at Carver Military Hospital
You move through the night
like slow molasses.

Walking on Seventh Street
images of sharp instruments
stalk your shadow.

A policeman questions you
then orders you to remove
the false face.

You quietly assure him
we all wear false faces
as he plays tug-of-war
with your Yuletide beard.
