THE VOLCANO
The volcano erupted,
felling tall trees,
hurling stones,
spewing fiery lava,
burning day into night.
Ashes choked all breath,
changing green to mourning white.
Now lichens, mosses
and grasses flourish,
as do seeds from trees thought dead,
nourished by
cinders and char.
Under this lush growth
the healed Earth's crust
conceals a barely perceptible scar.
