The Write Stuff vol. 7

Retribution

We speak a different language
of food vouchers, extensions, reconnection fees,
pain-killers and anti-depressants,
of simple fantasies like living somewhere warm
buying new clothes
and of not being looked at with those side long glances
if we're seen at all.
We are the self-medicators
we ring each other for advice
on how to take our drugs
what's worth watching on TV
the latest urban myths
like the one grand payout for pensioners when the GST comes in.

We are the ones Labour promised never to leave behind
and to whom the Liberals have never promised anything
except the persecution we deserve.
We are supporters of the gun laws
knowing Port Arthur is only ever one bus ride away.
