Frank Moorhouse once famously said:

Tasmania is a place where people bake their own curtains and
weave their own bread.

The purpose of this showcase is to show some of the literary talent on this island, and to promote the small presses behind the publications which so often find their way to bookshelves far beyond Tasmania's borders. More writers are alleged to live in Tasmania than anywhere else in Australia, per capita, and many of them choose to make their own books and form their own small presses it would seem, judging by the number of writer-owned presses below.

Some of these writer-publishers are also editors in their own right, and many work closely with The Society of Editors (Tasmania) Inc., the Tasmanian Writers Centre and/or Fellowship of Tasmanian Writers (Tas) Inc. These bodies can also give writers useful advice on their manuscripts prior to approaching a publisher. Tasmania is also said to have more self-publishers than other states. However, the listing below is not of self-publishers (though indeed some of the small presses below have published the work of their proprietors).

Note to prospective authors with manuscripts: Publishing is an expensive activity, and writers should approach publishers with this fact at the forefront of their minds. Not many of the presses or publications below accept unsolicited submissions, and writers would do well to first research the publisher's web site before approaching any of them with a manuscript. While most these presses pursue their publishing activities unaided by public funds, some receive the assistance of grants from the Australia Council and/or Arts Tasmania, and some with their own private funding. Those funding arrangements are not listed below.
